How to Install RedHat in VirtualBox?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a Linux-based operating system from Red Hat designed for businesses. RHEL can work on desktops, on servers, in hypervisors or in the cloud. Red Hat and its community-supported counterpart, Fedora, are among the most widely used Linux distributions in the world.

What is Virtual Box?

VirtualBox is open-source software for virtualizing the x86 computing architecture. It acts as a hypervisor, creating a VM (virtual machine) where the user can run another OS (operating system). … VirtualBox supports Windows, Linux, or macOS as its host OS.

What is an ISO file?

ISO files are archive files that typically contain the entire image of a CD or DVD. ISO images are distributed for operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Step 1: — Installing required items on your PC/Laptop.

Here we will be installing VirtualBox in our System.

1. VirtualBox: -

2. ISO file for Linux: -

Step 2: — Adding Machine (OS) to VirtualBox.

After installing VirtualBox just double click on the icon to open and you will see a window as shown below.

Now, we will add new machine to the VirtualBox

• To add click on New button to create a new machine.

• Now Give Name to your OS You can give any name .So, I’m giving name as RedHat 8.

• Now select machine folder where all your information and software will be installed.

• Now select the Linux Operating System from the Type dropdown list.

• Select version as Red Hat (64-bit).

  • Now Click on Next.

After clicking on Next you’ll see a window where you’ll be asked to allot the RAM to the OS.

• Allot around

500 MB if you want to use CLI (Command Line Interface)

1024 MB if you want to use GUI (Graphical User Interface)

  • After allotting click on Next.

After clicking on Next you’ll see a window where you’ll be asked about Virtual hard disk.

• Select Create a Virtual hard disk now

Now, click on Create

After clicking on Create you’ll see a window where you’ll be asked to about hard disk type.

• Select VDI (Virtual Disk Image)

Now , click on Next

After clicking on Next you’ll see a window where you’ll be asked about how Virtual hard disk should be used.

• Select Dynamically allotted

Now, click on Next

After clicking on Next you’ll see a window where you’ll be asked about the space of Virtual hard disk and its location has to be specified

. • Allot around 100 GB of space and specify the location.

Now , click on Create .

Now you will see that your Virtual device (OS) is created You can RedHat 8 is the one which we crated just now.

.Now we’ll Change settings of this virtual box

Step 3: — Get the Settings right

Now we will modify some of the settings so as to make the functioning smoother and faster.

  • Right Click on the Machine and then click on Settings

It will open the following window

Now we will navigate through different options and will modify the settings.

• First go to System located at the Left side of the Window

• Now move the Hard Disk to the top by clicking and selecting it and now navigating by using the buttons given on the left.

• Now Click on Processor present at the top side.

We are doing it because we have kept our ISO file in Hard disk.

After Clicking on the processor, you can change the number of processors to speed up the process.

• To change just drag the Slide bar.

You can keep it as 2 for best use.

Now Click on the Storage present at the left side of the window.

After Clicking on the Storage, we will attach the ISO file to our Operating System

  • Click on the Empty under Controller: IDE

After clicking on Empty

• Just Click on CD icon and select the ISO file

if you don’t see that here just click on choose a disk file…

then just attach the newly downloaded ISO file

After attaching you will see something like this

  • Now click on Network present on right hand side.

After Clicking on the network, we will change it from NAT to Bridged Adapter so as to maintain connectivity from Internet.

• Click on the dropdown from attached to option and Select Bridged Adapter.

Now Click on OK

All your settings will be saved you can see that after clicking on OK

Now that we have right settings, we will launch our Machine for Installation of RHEL 8.0

Step 4: — Launching OS and Installing RHEL 8.0 •

Click on start to Launch the Device

You will see a window like this:

• Now use up and down key to go to Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.0.0

Now press enter key.

Note: — Your mouse pointer will not work outside the Linux work area so to make it work just Press Ctrl key present at right side of spacebar.

After pressing enter key the installation will begin and wait till you see this window.

After you see this screen,

• Select English (India) from the given list.

• Now click on Continue button.

After clicking on Continue you’ll see a window where you’ll be asked to setup installation settings.

  • Now click on Time & Date option.

After clicking on Time & Date you’ll see a window where you’ll setup time and date settings.

• Now click on Region dropdown and select Asia from the dropdown menu.

• Now select City as Kolkata from the drop-down list and

click on done

After clicking on Done you’ll see a window then click on

Software selection to select our software.

You’ll get another window

After clicking on Software selection, you’ll see a window where you’ll select your software preference.

• Select Workstation for GUI (Graphical User Interface) OR

• Select Minimal Install for CLI (Command Line Interface)

After selecting click on Done.

After clicking on Done you’ll once again land into Installation Summary window.

Now we’ll click on installation destination .

After clicking on installation destination, you’ll see a window where you’ll select your installation destination.

• Select ATA VBOX HARDDISK by clicking on the harddisk image.

  • After selecting click on Done.

After clicking on Done you’ll once again land into Installation Summary window.

Now we’ll click on kdump

After clicking on kdump, you’ll see a window where you’ll see kdump enabled.

Uncheck the checkbox to disable kdump

  • After unchecking click on Done.

After clicking on Done you’ll once again land into Installation Summary window.

Now we’ll click on Network & Host Name.

After clicking on Network & Host Name, you’ll see a window where you’ll have to enable Ethernet so as to use internet.

Turn on the switch to enable ethernet connection

  • After turning on click on Done.

After clicking on Done you’ll once again land into Installation Summary window.

The Begin Installation button will turn Blue.

Now we’ll click on Begin Installation.

Step 5: Setting up user account and passwords.

After clicking on Begin Installation the installation will begin and You will have to setup account and password.

First Setup password for root user, to setup

  • Click on root password

After clicking on Root Password

• Now type the password and confirm it.

  • After confirming click on Done button.

Now we will add another user

To add another user just

  • Click on User Creation button.

After clicking on User Creation button

• Enter Your Details as asked.

  • Now click on Done.

After clicking on Done,

• wait for installation to finish

  • then click on Reboot.

Now after Reboot finishes you will see a window where you will be asked to Accept License Agreement so we will have to accept that.

To accept license agreement: -

  • Click on License Information

Now to accept License Agreement

• Check the checkbox

• Click on Done

Now the license agreement process is complete

Congrats! You have Successfully installed RHEL 8.0.0 on you system. Just login to explore more.

This is the final window that you’ll see after waiting for few minutes.

You can login by clicking on your account and entering the password.
